Underground Music is an essential scene in Illinois. Working from The Tree in Joliet, to much bigger clubs in the city Underground Music is everywhere. Almost every weekend I can find you a dozen shows between Harlem Ave and Jefferson St in Joliet. The local scene is all over the place with recent emerging acts like King Louie, Cheef Kief, Lil Herb, Lil Durk, Brewski and many others. There are an estimated 35,000 rappers in the Chicago land area. A lot of them stay local and are now trending to follow the art into their 30's and 40's. This is an outlet for some, a career path for others.
Underground Music has been around for almost 50 years and it's just lighting up in Chicago in all the good and bad ways possible. With an increase in gang violence, a lot of rap clicks end up with the key artist dead or in jail prior to making it, and those who do make it still have their struggles. The scene as profitable as it may be can also be dangerous. A lot of great talent is currently emerging from the woodwork, but this still doesn't seem to stop the constant violence associated with the Chicagoland Underground Music Scene. I feel we as the media and people in this industry need to be sure we keep a close eye on the non stop violence. It's all over
