Singer-songwriter Derek Zanetti, and sole member of The Homeless Gospel Choir, is known best for his honest lyrics the speak out against greed, privilege and complacency. With “Black Friday,” Zanetti takes aim at grotesque consumerism and the tragedies that befall in its wake.
"On Thanksgiving Weekend this year I was watching the news and there was a whole string of Holiday sales adds about the door busting savings, and early bird specials, and all the bells and whistles that come along with it,” explains Zanetti. “In between a constant bombardment of commercials, a news flash scrolled across the screen that said "Woman was trampled to death in a department store. Stay tuned to get the full scoop." And without missing a beat the network went right back to holiday commercials, advertisements, and whatever bullshit they were being paid to advertise. I was so Utterly disgusted by what I had seen, I grabbed my notepad and pen and wrote what would become “Black Friday.” I hope This video disturbs you as much as it disturbs me.”
The Homeless Gospel Choir recently debuted their song “Untitled,” which is a song of hope and talks about living outside the confines of traditional American ideals. Stream the track at PunkNews.org.
